This project was for the full refurbishment of a secondary school in a very deprived area.  The aim of the project was to stimulate the learning for the pupils by providing improvement to the learning facilities.  The project also including the re-use of several buildings for vocational learning workshops and a new sports facility.  The difficulties relating to security at the school were considered in great detail due to vandalism and truancy issues.  The school also has a residential apartment for staff where access had to be maintained throughout the project.

We worked closely with the architects to ensure the proposals were compliant while still meeting the needs of the school.

Kearsley Academy, Manchester

Construction of New Academy School. The requirements of the end user of the building were to have a school that was open internally as possible in circulation spaces to create a feeling of space and belonging.  The design called for an open atrium designed in conjunction with fire engineering techniques to allow the space to flow naturally with minimal compartmentation.

Barking and Dagenham College

"Light and airy", "exciting", "inspiring" and "amazing" -these are just some of the great responses to the 2013 redevelopment of Barking & Dagenham College's Rush Green campus.  The College has just launched its Jubilee Building, a major milestone in the redevelopment of its 50 year old, 28 acre main site.

An ultra-modern frontage uses large expanses of glass to let the light stream in. On your way to the new main reception you now pass facilities open to students, staff and the community: The Chef’s Hat, the College’s commercial training restaurant, a Café, and a series of retail units where entrepreneurial students can launch their own businesses.

Stockport College

This project was a large scale refurbishment and extension of a further education college consisting of several phases. The project involved the full refurbishment of a grade 2 listed building that had originally been used as a workhouse and had fallen into disrepair.  The clock tower was deemed to be of significant historical interest and we therefore assisted with ensuring that the project maintained the architectural value of the building whilst ensuring compliance with the building regulations.

Other phases included the construction of a new building to house vocational courses relating to the construction industry.

Mid Cheshire College

Winsford Learning Zone is a new three storey 3400sq.m building replacing the previous outgrown premises. The building comprises teaching, learning and vocational facilities for 800 students. The tight town centre site, a remediated former gasometer works, posed many challenges which were overcome through the design process.

The design is both dramatic and functional, easy to navigate and makes a positive statement for education. The building aims to provide a feel good factor for its users together with providing a strong sense of place in a prominent town centre location. The client wanted to create an environment that would inspire and motivate learners, widen participation, redefine its identity and raise their profile through relocation to a purpose built campus.
